We’ve received so many nice comments from players saying our game is addictive and fun. Thanks! In this little post, I wanted to talk a bit about the science of fun. Our game boards are not random. They start with random letters from a custom letter distribution that we created, but then we curate the set of boards that make it “live” into the game. There’s a lot of rules that we use to decide what’s fun, but here’s a few that you may have noticed:
- Did you know that every tile in the board is used in at least one word?
- Did you know that high value tiles (worth 5 or more) are guaranteed to be in at least 3 words? This means that every Q, Qu, Z, K, and so on, are all usable at least 3 times.
- Did you notice that every board has lots of words? Too many, by some player’s feedback. This is to ensure there’s enough common words in each board that everyone knows. In the process, it allows a lot of obscure words.
- Did you know that no two puzzles are ever the same?
These are all aspects of making it fun every round. In the first couple of days, we were tweaking the board maker a lot. Now, it is stable, but we have a bunch of ideas to make it even better, that you will be seeing soon.
When you combine the fact that every game has a curated board that will be fun to play with the fact that there’s enough words and not enough time to “get them all”—you start to get the magic of why you feel like “I just need to play one more game…” Of course, the competition with the rest of the Internet doesn’t hurt either…
Please send us more feedback! We love to hear it and we try to respond to every one.
